It’s the latest instalment in the Dr Freakenstein dynasty!!!

As well as fuzz, it has two types of modulation, a pressure-operated expression pedal (to do wah wah-like effects), a tunable drone facility - capable of ring modulator tones - and a noise gate; it’s actually a very specific kind of multi-effects pedal.

FUZZ

The fuzz circuit is the same massive distortion one used in the original Dr Freakenstein Fuzz (plus the three versions that followed, and the first Dr Freakenstein Chop Fuzz, and the six minipedal versions). It’s incredibly loud, with a ton of low-end, and searing highs available.Yet it’s weirdly quiet when you’re not playing.

The ‘OVERTONE’ control

This is like a wah wah with the tone of an extreme phaser. Set it using the knob, manipulate it in real time by foot with our Igor pressure pad controller (supplied), or with the CV input.

The ‘LFO’ section

This modulates the signal in a slightly more ‘3D’ way than the ‘overtone’ sound. Moving in a triangle waveshape, the speed can be set using two knobs. ‘Slow’ has a low speed range - for long, slowly-twisting cycles right up to fast wobbles, while the second one - ‘fast’ - is in the audio range; tune it in to a specific pitch (across several octaves) underneath the notes or chords that you’re playing. Toggle between these two on-the-fly with the footswitch.

‘CHOP’

The Chop Fuzzz has a hard squarewave tremolo built-in. When locked-on, in combination with the ‘LFO’ section it can create all kinds of slowly sweeping helicopter effects, or fast, bubbling synthy-sounds.

Or flash it on and off at specific points for a chop accent using the Igor controller.

This is a digital reverb mini-pedal, simple to use, but giving a whole selection of unique – and very useful – new sounds. It comes with an Igor expression pad for real-time control. ‘Size’ adjusts the length of the effect, and ‘Level’ the amount of it you hear (the original guitar signal is always present).

DISTORTION

The Reverb-X really comes into its own in how it can deal with the reverb. It’s based on the excitement of plugging an overdrive pedal after a reverb pedal; it’s ‘wrong’, but everything you play sounds huge and epic, exaggerated and full of texture and detail… Here, an overdrive circuit – after the reverb – can be blended in via the ‘Distn’ knob. Have it totally clean, a bit gritty, quite rough, or dial in a fully burnt-out glow.

At all times, however, the input signal is unaffected; if you already use an overdrive pedal, the Reverb-X can add a whole new dimension of distortion to your sound! If your tone is clean however, it stays clean – no matter how much distorted reverb you dial in.

Usually though, in this situation when you stop playing, the hum from your cable alone would be as loud as the notes you were playing! So you have to have a noise gate involved…

NOISE GATE

The noise gate is post reverb and distortion. With it switched on it opens when you play, and closes hard when you stop, cutting off any reverb that’s happening – giving an incredibly dramatic and original effect. Sure, it’s a gated reverb, but play a long riff and the gate stays open, giving the full reverberation as set by the ‘Size’ knob. Stop playing and the whole thing is shut down, giving a tight control over it – like a hard-edited ‘sample’.

The ‘input’ control and ‘Overload’ LED ensure that the output is always as loud – and clean (if desired) – as possible. The ‘Out’ knob has plenty of spare output volume on tap.

IGOR:

Plug in the Igor expression pad and you get no reverb at all. However as you start to lean on it the signal gets diverted to the waiting reverb pathway, and a bloom of reverberation grows behind whatever notes you’re playing. Take your foot off of Igor and you go back to fully dry – but the reverb decays on its own.

Or have the ‘Gate’ switch in, and the added reverb is cut short, like some twisted dub-meister at the controls, messing with everyone’s depth perception….

The two types of reverb available are set to cover the widest range of musical situations as possible. This gives some great unusual rhythmical delay effects when a choppy guitar cuts off a repeating delay in a rhythmical pattern. Or a quick, high-feedback delay - normally wildly out-of-control - gets attached to each single note you play, shutting off into edgy silence in each gap.

Suddenly, for the first time, it feels like you’re in control of echo feedback!

Start playing again and the gate opens – with the brand new signal oscillating.

OTHER CONTROLS

It comes with an Igor pressure pad controller which can adjust delay speed, amount of feedback, or work as a ‘send’ control; while your sound is dry, as you press on Igor, the signal is diverted through the pedal’s delay circuitry. When you release Igor you carry on playing dry while the diverted notes echo away on their own… An incredibly useful and expressive feature for everyday use!

The Echo-X has 540ms of delay time available, and has level, rate, feedback, input, and volume controls. ‘LVL’ goes from no echo, to slightly louder than the input signal. ‘FBK’ meanwhile goes from a single repeat to runaway overloading feedback oscillation.

‘INPT’ governs the input signal, and if this is too loud the red ‘overload’ LED comes on and it needs to be turned down if you want to avoid the clean signal distorting. The volume knob however can push the volume back up.

The Echo-X is housed in a Rainger FX mini-pedal enclosure, with all sockets mounted on the top end panel.
